We’ve been lucky enough to visit many photogenic spots around the world. But this canyon is truly unique. The colors of the rocks, the concentration of the spires make it hard to believe that some Disneyland artist didn’t make this whole thing up.
Light houses are a particular fancy of mine. We live on Lake Michigan in the summertime and, exploring the Lake Michigan coast, I find plenty of them. This lighthouse is at Charlevoix Michigan. I caught it at sunset. The handrails caught the reflection from the setting sun. They bring the viewer's eyes out to the silhouetted lighthouse and then to the sunset beyond. When I gaze at this image, my eyes are pulled into it and I can lose myself In memories of Northern Michigan.
Not every image I like is a landscape. Here, we were in Dubrovnik, Croatia. The texture of this old building, its teal green shutters and bright laundry caught my eye. I was ready to take the picture but somehow it seemed lifeless. Then a cooperative pedestrian walked through the scene and, as she got just far enough into it, I snapped the picture. I brightened up the colors a bit post process. When I look at it, the image takes me back to that ancient city.
Sometimes when you’re searching for an image, you suddenly realize that it’s just outside your window. These little spring flowers grow right beside our driveway. When I went to take the pictures, I was able to show them in front of the bark to a big gum tree. I think the texture of that bark make for a gentle and pleasing image.
When I was in Death Valley last December, I was intrigued by the dry, parched ground. I used a wide angle lens to capture it leading up to a steep hill. After shooting it, I put color in the interesting clouds and painted a red glow on the soil and hill. I liked the marriage of the stark Death Valley scene with the warmth of the setting sun.
We love going to Las Vegas. Not for gambling, we usually blow about $100 playing twenty-five cent machine blackjack, but we love Las Vegas for the glamour and glitz and the entertainment. This image is from the balcony of our room in the Cosmopolitan. The perfect view focusing on the Eiffel Tower and the view down the strip.
Yosemite National Park is the side of this stream rushing with the melting snow from the high peaks.
A few years ago I took a trip to the Joshua Tree National Park. The Joshua tree has a unique look. I’m told that its name was given to it by Mormon settlers crossing the Mojave Desert in the mid 19th century. This spindly little tree with its shaggy bark looks to me to be a happy little guy. I had fun taking images of it among the sandstone and open grasslands.
